What are Parish and Probate Records?
When religion was the governing force in Britain, church administrators were asked to keep records for their communities or “parishes.” They also maintained registers for local events like christenings, marriages and burials.

Probate records, such as wills and other legal documents, were maintained by civil courts rather than ecclesiastical organizations.

What is the Pallot Index?
The Pallot Index is a searchable listing of names compiled from London-area parish records. Spanning 1787 through 1837, this four-million–name index includes information about the baptisms and marriages performed prior to the introduction of civil registration records. This index is exclusive to Ancestry.com.
