What do I need?

The Ancestry Toolbar requires the following:

  • Windows XP/2000/Vista
  • Internet Explorer version 6 & 7
  • Firefox 2 or higher

When and how do I use it?

There are two places you can conduct a search.

  1. From your Ancestry family tree – while viewing a person in your tree, you’ll notice a “search the web” link in the “web links” section. Clicking this will open a new window showing the results of a Google–powered online search for that person’s name.
  2. Everywhere else – the Ancestry toolbar appears at the top of your internet browser and gives you the choice of two different searches. The default search will allow you to specifically search Ancestry for a name using Google’s™ search engine. To search the entire internet, click the arrow to the right of the search field and select “search the web (Google)”.
NOTE:
You are responsible for the content you add to your tree, including obtaining copyright permissions where necessary.

Using the toolbar

When you find a result you want to save, click the “save” button in the toolbar. You’ll have the choice to instantly save the web link alone, or photos and text from the page as well.

Save Options

If you choose to save pictures and text, the toolbar will allow you to highlight pictures and blocks of text.

After selecting the items you’d like to save to your tree, click the orange “Save Selected Items” button.

Next, indicate the person in your tree you’d like these items saved for. The interface will help you choose the correct person, auto–filling the field and allowing you to pick the right ancestor.

Attach to someone in your family tree

That’s it! A copy of the photo/story has been attached to your tree, as well as a link back to the source. Click on the person’s name to return to their place in your tree.
